More efficient Wood Chipping with a Forestry WinchMore efficient Wood Chipping with a Forestry Winch

Together with a colleague, Svend Åge Lunde runs a business in Ejstrup near Ringkøbing. They do wood chipping and tree felling for owners of gardens, parks and woodland, and also manage a 35 ha spruce plantation.

Eighteen months ago Svend bought a new TP 270 wood chipper – a special version, with a forestry winch for dragging the trees to the chipper.

“It’s been a great success,” says Svend. “We’ll never again get a wood chipper without a winch. It has saved us a lot of hard work in the forest, and we can work with one man fewer, while still managing to chip a lot more than before.

“Another advantage is that we can feed the wood chipper by hand if we use the winch, which we can’t do if we use a crane,” says Svend.

The forestry winch is radio-controlled and operated by the person who puts lifting tongs or a chain on the trunks.

“We can drag the tree trunks right up to the wood chipper, and if we move the lifting tongs further down the trunk, the winch can drag the trunk right into the feed section, and the chipper does the rest,” explains Svend. “We can chip trunks measuring up to 27 cm in diameter in our wood chipper – that’s as thick as a telephone pole.

The TP 270 wood chipper with forestry winch has been in use in Ejstrup for the last two seasons, and the winch has passed the test with flying colours.

“Previously we needed three men to operate the wood chipper. Today we can do it perfectly well with two men, and if necessary we can manage with just one,” says Svend.

The forestry winch is particularly useful for collecting trees on slopes. The forestry winch can also drag trees out of gardens the wood chipper and tractor cannot enter.
